2,800-Pound Honda Rocket Achieves Clean Launch and Landing

Honda just pulled off something quite amazing; it did not happen on a road. Originally well-known for its motorcycles and cars, the company has effectively debuted and landed an experimental reusable rocket for the first time.

The test was conducted in Taiki Town, a coastal area of Hokkaido, Japan. Thanks to public and private sector cooperation including the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), this small town has quietly grown to be a center for space testing over the years. Rising from here, Honda’s rocket shot to a height of 890 feet and then landed exactly 37 cm from the target.

That is not chance. That has accuracy.

Built by Honda’s research and development staff, the rocket was almost 21 feet tall and weighed more than 2,800 pounds. Although the flight lasted 56.6 seconds, in that little time it displayed some significant events: consistent liftoff, flawless control in the air, and a pinpoint landing on four retractable legs. During liftoff, those same legs supported the rocket.

Why Is Honda Aiming for rockets?

You might be asking: Why is a car company playing about in space?

Though it hasn’t said much about it since, Honda formally expressed interest in space back in 2021. Fascinating is how the company is guiding and controlling its rockets using technology it already developed for other sectors, including robotics and self-driving systems. Now helping rockets fly straight and land softly are the sensors and automated tools designed for road vehicles.

Honda is working with accuracy, leveraging current strengths, and carefully, deliberately moving forward instead of starting from nothing.

And this is more than just a leisurely scientific experiment.

Honda sees promise in having its own small-scale launch system, particularly given the speed at which society is turning toward satellite-based technologies. Consider GPS, networks of communication, and linked automobiles. Should Honda eventually be able to launch its own satellites, it will have a significant advantage in the mobility and technology sectors.

Aiming for Suborbital Flights by 2029

Honda is clear right now that this rocket project is still in research stage. As yet, no official strategy exists to turn this into a business. They are not, however, hiding the fact that a more ambitious target—suborbital space by 2029—is clearly visible.

Officially the edge of space, suborbital means flights above 100 kilometers (or 62 miles), but without entering complete orbit. In aeronautical, it marks a significant turning point and may open doors for more complex projects.

Though challenging, reaching that height is doable. Entering orbit, however, presents a quite different difficulty. Businesses like SpaceX and Blue Origin have spent years developing the infrastructure and hardware needed to regularly do that. It remains unknown whether Honda chooses to concentrate on smaller-scale launches or join that race.

This is clear: Honda isn’t merely experimenting with the successful launch and landing display. They are creating actual something.

Their management of landing a rocket with less than half a meter of error speaks much about their seriousness. And with a well-defined goal for the next several years, Honda’s space adventure could only be getting started.

Though early days still, Honda’s message is clear: they are now considering other factors besides roads. They are beginning to look up.
