Nine teenagers were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, an incident the sheriff’s office said “originated over a girl.”

Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Wright’s body on June 24 on First Neck Road. He had been shot multiple times. The road where his body was found is a rural area approximately 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, the sheriff’s office arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, who officials say shot and killed Wright during an argument.

Investigators say that Raper shot Wright after the two had a verbal altercation in which the teens’ comments “became more aggressive,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Deputies say they have a video recording of the shooting that was taken by a person involved in the incident.

Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said the incident began with a dispute over a female. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said in an interview. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”

Sheriff’s investigators said several teens who were with Wright that day “actively conspired” to bring him to where Raper was waiting for him. They were aware that Raper had a gun and was prepared to use it. Raper had earlier told someone, who was not identified, that he was going to shoot Wright.

Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital, “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy. I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

Teenager Charged With Playing Key Role in Set-Up

In addition to Raper, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach was arrested. Kistenmacher, who was identified as Wright’s girlfriend, is charged with accessory before the fact of murder in connection with the case, according to a sheriff’s office arrest warrant.

The charge alleges that Kistenmacher, who was at the scene of the shooting, “did have the felonious intent to bring about the death of Trey Dean Wright and did aid and abet Devan Scott Raper by bringing him to the incident location and the victim Trey Dean Wright knowing Raper was armed with a deadly weapon and that a shooting was about to take place.”

Deputies said Wright and another group of friends were lured to where Raper was waiting for them. The other teenagers arrested were charged under the “felony murder rule,” a legal doctrine that holds that accomplices of a person who commits murder are guilty of murder as well.

Florence County sheriff’s office officials made the new arrests for several weeks. Kistenmacher was the sixth person arrested in the case. All of the suspects are from the Myrtle Beach area.

The arrest warrants do not mention a name for the third party, or parties, to the alleged initial argument, which was the stated reason for the dispute.

Sheriff’s officials said the five others were arraigned in court the previous week. Five additional arrests were made in early August. They include 18-year-old Hunter Kendall and 17-year-olds Corrine Belviso and Sydney Kearns. Kendall and Belviso each made a $10,000 bond. Kearns made a $5,000 bond.

South Carolina law makes it possible for those under the age of 18 to be charged as adults in cases of violent crimes, and all five were charged in that manner. The decision to charge the teens as adults was made based on the seriousness of the crime and the level of the involvement of each, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that Major Michael Nunn of the sheriff’s office noted that the group of teenagers, including the girlfriend, had “a hand in orchestrating” the shooting that killed Wright.

“All those individuals were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation, and they knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants,” Nunn told WBTW-TV.

In addition to Raper, the three from Myrtle Beach are also facing murder charges. Kendall was arrested Aug. 4, and his bond was denied. Belviso was arrested Aug. 3 and paid a $10,000 bond. Kearns was arrested Aug. 2 and paid a $5,000 bond. The other three suspects are facing accessory charges.

Sheriff’s officials have not provided more detailed information, and the state attorney’s office declined to discuss the case. The investigation continues.
