The Rise of The Mule and the Fate of Psychohistory
Apple TV+ has shared a new trailer for the upcoming third season of Foundation. The sci-fi series is the creator’s big-budget take on the Isaac Asimov novels of the same name, and in the new trailer, the streaming service teases a whole new crisis, set on a galactic scale.
Season 3 of Foundation is set to premiere on July 11, 2025, with new episodes coming out each week until September 12. In the new trailer, the third season looks at an uncertain future for the galaxy with both the Foundation and the Galactic Empire thrown into crisis and forced to form an uneasy alliance against a mysterious and powerful threat.
A View of Disaster Approaching
Apple TV+’s Foundation tells the story of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and his attempt to use his theories on mathematics and sociology to predict the future of human civilization and potentially save it from complete collapse. The story sees both heroes and villains play out on a massive scale, with the show making huge jumps in time between seasons.
Season 1 of Foundation wrapped with a 138-year time jump, while season 2 was a massive look at the Second Crisis in the books, a major galactic turning point between the Foundation and the Galactic Empire that ruled the known galaxy. The Foundation took a far darker turn than Asimov had originally written in these early years, weaponizing religion to take over more planets and building up an army of followers on its own without Seldon’s consent. It was also introduced to a new “secret colony” of people known as the “Mentalics”, which were essentially a group of people with powerful psionic abilities.
Season 3 of Foundation will jump even further into the future, landing 152 years after the events of the second season, and right in the middle of what’s known as the Third Crisis in the Asimov books. Apple TV+’s synopsis for season 3 states that the Foundation has grown far more established and powerful than it was during the earlier parts of the series, while the once-powerful Cleonic Dynasty was on the other hand falling into decline. Both powers were facing threats both from each other and from external forces, but they were left to reluctantly unite against a common enemy that would bring all of their plans to ruin: the Mule, a powerful warlord and megalomaniac who can both command an army and control people’s minds.
Foundation’s Season 3 Trailer, Featuring The Mule, Dropped
The trailer begins with the ominous voice of Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) reciting a fairly depressing line, one that perfectly sums up just how much is on the line in the show’s next chapter. He says, “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” He’s immediately followed by Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), the former secretary who’s steadily risen in prominence across the series. “We’re out of time,” she says.
The show has been building to the next phase of the Asimov Foundation series for a while now. Introducing the Mule, though, marks an important and different kind of villain for the series. Unlike in the books, this version of The Mule is a major new antagonist in the first place. It seems as though he’s been lurking behind the scenes all this time. Played by Pilou Asbæ k, the trailer for Foundation’s third season confirms that The Mule is a charismatic and extremely powerful man, with his giant army and the ability to control people’s minds.
“I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” he boasts in the trailer, followed by one of the characters falling into his grasp at his word. “It only takes a little nudge,” he says. The trailer then launches into a brief sequence of explosions, action sequences, and buildings collapsing to show just how powerful this new threat is.
Series stars Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann return to play the three imperial clones Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. Season 3 also marks the return of Harris as Hari Seldon, Llobell as Gaal Dornick, and Laura Birn as the mysterious android Eto Demerzel.
On Foundation, Everything’s the Future, and No One Has a Future
At the core of Foundation has been the concept of “psychohistory” that Seldon and other mathematicians and scientists have developed to predict the long-term outcomes of human behavior. But Foundation’s third season is threatening to undo that model entirely. The mysterious Mule appears to be capable of overriding even the cold logic of predictions based on past events and human emotion, too. Will there still be any value in trying to chart human behavior at all?
The trailer also shows the show’s creators continuing to double down on the high stakes and epic scope of the Foundation story, even if there are certainly some impressive sequences here and there across all three seasons. The battle between the Galactic Empire, Foundation, and this new Mule threat promises to have even higher stakes, more intricate characters, and new world-building that’s sure to get more viewers to sign up for Apple TV+.
Season 3 of Foundation seems like it’s going to test what happens when you try to play the long game against the impossible. It’s not just galactic peace that The Mule could destroy, it’s the idea that the future is knowable at all.
