Apple TV+ teases darker, more intense Invasion in Season 3

You’re not alone if you missed Invasion, Apple TV+’s sci-fi series vying for attention with two other Apple TV+ series that have been dominating Apple’s streaming service: Silo and Foundation. To be fair, Invasion has developed a dedicated following, although it has also been met with a range of responses from its viewership since it first premiered. Reviews were more polarized at the start, in part due to season one being more of a slow burn that didn’t quite click at first. It’s also been a love/hate thing with some fans of the show.

All of that is true, but Invasion hasn’t been without its merits. For one, the cinematography has been consistently beautiful throughout. Plus, the series’ creators have at least been ambitious in the themes they wanted to explore, going for bigger and bolder when it came to ideas, even if the execution didn’t always match.

Now we have a trailer for season three, and it shows a series that has fully arrived and appears to have found its footing. If you’ve missed Invasion, it’s created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg. The latter is mostly known for his work as a producer and director on the recent X-Men movies, in addition to working on the Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Martian. The pitch of Invasion has also always been a strong one: a sci-fi series about an alien invasion, but told through the lens of normal people in different locations all over the world. Invasion incorporates English, Japanese, and Pashto into the proceedings.

Invasion mostly dealt with the early moments of the alien threat in season one. The titular threat itself even played second fiddle to the more character-driven storylines that focused on interpersonal drama among its characters. It was a bit of a head-scratcher for those expecting to see some intense alien action when it first debuted, but the approach to the story set a more intimate tone for Invasion.

Season one ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with the looming presence of the aliens and their full-scale invasion no longer a secret. Season 2 hit the ground running with more action and higher stakes overall, which gave the series a different energy and was a welcome change. Invasion ramped up the plot considerably by showing what it would be like if all the characters from season one had to survive in a world where humanity was relegated to small, protected safe zones. There was also a fair bit of tough moral choices for people to make as they had to figure out a way to survive in this new world. Pacing was still on the slow side, but the story did gather a bit more momentum in this sophomore outing to set up the transition to the third season.

Season 3 To Bring The Cast Together For Mothership Invasion

The show picks back up two years later, with the alien menace growing increasingly menacing. The official description notes that it will mark the first time that all the different character perspectives that we’ve seen come into contact for the first time. Most of the main characters were in different parts of the world for the first two seasons, with season three setting up a central narrative where they all team up on a dangerous mission to board the alien mothership.

Characters teaming up together is a big shift for the series in many ways, as Invasion has placed a major emphasis on characters being spread all over the globe for the bulk of its first two seasons. The trailer makes clear that the threat of the aliens is greater than ever. The otherworldly forces are described as having now reached their “apex” form, and they have deadly tendrils that have quickly spread over the globe. The fate of the world is on the line, and it will take the collective skills, knowledge, and resolve of all the characters to have a fighting chance of saving humanity. Alliances will be formed, relationships will be tested, and more.

Returning for the new season are Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik, Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato, Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole, India Brown as Jamila Hudson, Shane Zaza as the polarizing tech mogul Nikhil Kapur, and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. The latest addition to the cast is a new series regular in the form of Erika Alexander.

As far as storytelling goes, the third season will offer the chance for characters and various narrative arcs to come to a head, while also getting a good dose of the larger-scale action and all-out alien confrontation that many Invasion viewers were hoping for from the beginning. It also gives Invasion the chance to find the right mix between the human elements of the story that have been its bread and butter and some of the sci-fi, big-budget spectacle that the story premise also has the potential to deliver.

It’s unclear if Invasion will manage to turn around the opinions of its doubters, but the tone of the trailer and the story setup for the next season of Invasion show a series that is much more confident in its vision. Season 3 of Invasion has the potential to merge its emotional character work with bigger set pieces, higher stakes, and a sense of urgency that’s what elevates a show to must-watch status.

Season three of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025. Fans new and old will soon see if the global sci-fi adventure is ready to deliver on all of the drama and thrills it’s been building up to for three seasons.
