Could the Assassin’s Creed Show Explore New Characters Entirely?
The live-action series based on the Assassin’s Creed series of Ubisoft video games has been greenlit by Netflix after being announced in 2020, but still has not had much information on its development. According to sources familiar with the project, the series will have showrunners Roberto Patino and David Wiener.
Patino, who was previously showrunner on the TV series Sons of Anarchy and Westworld, and David Wiener, who was showrunner on the live-action Halo series on Paramount+ and served as co-executive producer and head writer on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, were chosen to direct and create Assassin’s Creed after the previous version of the show was dissolved.
The team has shared the statement, which talks about their love for the project and working on it after being fans since its first release. They said: “We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since the first game was released in 2007. We’re continually blown away by the scale of the world and the scope of the stories that it presents to us. Beyond the adrenaline-fueled action and the grand history, there’s a very personal story to tell about identity, purpose, faith, and the bonds between us across time.”
They also added that the show “is about the value of human connection – across time, across cultures – and the danger of disconnecting.” While Netflix and Ubisoft have not commented on the project, both Roberto Patino and David Wiener have a great connection with the games, which should help with giving fans what they want.
The series will be the second live-action Assassin’s Creed after Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed in theaters, which was considered to have been average.
Assassin’s Creed – Overview and Gameplay Details
Assassin’s Creed is a video game franchise created by Canadian game developer Ubisoft. It is most known for its historical fiction action-adventure games, but has included several other genres. The first two games were designed to revolve around “social stealth” and were set during the Crusades in the Holy Land. The series made a breakthrough when Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations were set in Renaissance Italy.
The main story of each game in the series follows the members of a modern-day group known as Abstergo Industries as they use a device called the Animus, which allows them to relive the genetic memories of their ancestors. In the Animus, they relive the lives of an Assassin, a member of a long-standing brotherhood that is constantly at war with a rival group of Templars.
Throughout the 18 years of the series’ existence, Assassin’s Creed has released 14 mainline games, with each installment in the series set in a different historical time and place with its protagonist. The games have been set in everything from Revolutionary America, the Caribbean high seas, feudal Japan, the streets of Victorian London, the pyramids of Ancient Egypt, and into the future. The later games in the series would be developed into an open-world RPG format, spanning the Ancient Greece era to even Viking Britain.
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, the most recent release in the series, is set in feudal Japan, a place that the fans had been longing to see the main series set in for a long time. As game writer on the project, Danielle Letourneau mentioned in a previous interview, the game took two years in development to finish and was also due to be released around that time. It was also stated that this decision to delay the game paid off, as fans were more than satisfied with the result.
The live-action Netflix series is still under wraps in many ways. It has been confirmed that the show will stick to the formula known to the fans of the series. It would be about modern-day people, played by their ancestors through the Animus in the lives of the Assassins over several generations, caught in the war between Assassins and Templars. Apart from that, there has been no mention of casting, setting, or release date of the series.
Netflix has already confirmed that it will be working on a series based on the Assassin’s Creed, but it is not yet known when it will be available for streaming.
Former Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Showrunner Commented on the Series
One can only expect more developments to come regarding the live-action series for now. Especially as Netflix has since invested its time and money in sci-fi and fantasy that are directed to successful adaptations, making Assassin’s Creed very much likely to succeed if it is a faithful adaptation to the core of the games.
This may also depend on how the company, Roberto Patino, and David Wiener balance everything from the history, fantasy, action, thrill, and the philosophy of the games to make it an enticing show not only for the fans of the games, but for the general audiences.
