First Ironheart Trailer Hints at Darker MCU Storyline

Ryan Coogler is having a very good year. After riding the wave of his latest film, Sinners, to an impressive run at the box office, the director already has another project in the works: Marvel’s limited series Ironheart. The studio has just released a stylish new trailer ahead of the show’s eagerly awaited June 2025 premiere.

The six-episode Marvel Cinematic Universe series stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart, a teenage technology genius who is a protégé of Tony Stark in the original comics. Ironheart will be the last television series installment in the MCU’s Phase Five.

Ironheart was originally announced in December 2020, with a 2023 premiere window. However, Marvel later made some significant adjustments to their long-term content strategy, announcing they would produce fewer projects each year to avoid oversaturation of the market. The latest delay has put the date for the summer debut of Ironheart, and footage first debuted at the 2024 D23 convention promised “A crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center,” which could indicate a darker and more grounded MCU series.

The character of Riri Williams made her first screen appearance in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the film, she became embroiled in a war with Namor and his blue-skinned army after developing a vibranium detector during her time studying at MIT. The two eventually formed a bond through their mutual love of science, and Riri later built an armored suit, inspired by Iron Man, to help Wakanda fight. Once the war was over, Riri had to leave the suit with the Wakandans and return to MIT.

A film about Technology vs. Magic

The show Ironheart opens a few months after the conclusion of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The official synopsis states: “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).”

The series features an ensemble cast of other characters. Lyric Ross will play Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich plays Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana will be Cousin John; Matthew Elam plays Xavier Washington; and Anji White will play Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée has been added as Slug. Additionally, Jim Rash has been confirmed to return to the MCU as the dean of MIT, reprising the role he first took on in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen will also play a role, though no details about his character have been revealed.

The newly released trailer sets the scene almost immediately. It opens with Riri entering a pizza restaurant that is closed and deserted, only to find she is locked inside an elevator. It is at this point that the audience is introduced to The Hood (Anthony Ramos), who reveals that there is poison in the elevator and Riri has only two minutes to get out before it kills her. However, this has all been a test—or, in his words, an “interview”—set up by The Hood, as he issues an ultimatum over the intercom: she will asphyxiate unless she breaks into a floor-mounted safe that contains a gas mask. Riri, naturally, refuses to go along with his plan and instead creates her own, improvised solution to the problem.

Impressed by her resourcefulness, The Hood invites Riri to work with him on something “big and chaotic and not exactly on the up and up.” She immediately catches on that this is what he means by “iconic” and quickly agrees to team up with him. This decision comes with warnings from her friends, however, and she is especially called out by Natalie for her blind trust in The Hood. Her friend may have a point, too, as The Hood earlier told Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”

The show will no doubt grapple with what “questionable” actions Riri is willing to get away with in the name of her dream, and if she is willing to sacrifice the people around her to get it. For now, viewers can get a taste of the action, tension, and interpersonal drama from the trailer and a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette.

Marvel has confirmed that the first three episodes of Ironheart will arrive on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with the remaining three dropping each subsequent week. As of yet, no second season has been announced, but if the show is successful, the possibility has been left open.
