The Microsoft-owned software development platform GitHub has disclosed a major update to the AI coding assistant GitHub Copilot, which may result in higher charges for users who depend on its advanced AI models. GitHub disclosed the introduction of a “premium requests” system through their Friday blog post, which will apply rate limits to users who choose advanced AI models for complex programming tasks beyond the basic offering.

Users who depend on Copilot for “agentic” coding tasks and multi-file editing will be impacted by the launch of premium requests. Subscribers to GitHub Copilot will maintain unlimited access to the GPT-4o base model but will face monthly usage limits when working with advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.

Starting May 5th, GitHub will enforce a monthly ceiling of 300 premium requests for users subscribed to the standard Copilot Pro plan at $20 per month. Business users on Copilot Business and enterprise clients on Copilot Enterprise will experience these constraints by obtaining 300 and 1,000 premium requests monthly. Business and Enterprise tier users will experience these changes starting May 12th through May 19th.

GitHub offers alternative solutions for users who expect to surpass these request limits. Business plan customers who exceed their premium request limits can buy extra requests for $0.04 each. Users have the option to move to GitHub’s new Copilot Pro+ subscription plan. Copilot Pro+ delivers access to the top AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 and 1,500 premium requests each month for $39.

The pricing model adjustment for Copilot’s advanced AI models comes after a similar update from the AI coding platform Devin made a day earlier, which indicates a market trend based on the need for significant computational power to operate these sophisticated systems. Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet demonstrates improved capabilities to verify data accuracy and generate dependable code solutions. The trade-off for improved accuracy involves higher processing demands and longer time consumption, which leads to increased operational costs.

Microsoft continues to experience major revenue benefits from GitHub Copilot even though premium models now incur usage-based fees. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated during his August address that Copilot generated more than 40% of GitHub’s revenue growth for the year 2024. He pointed out that Copilot’s present business scale exceeds GitHub’s entire revenue at the time of its acquisition by the tech giant seven years ago, which demonstrates its outstanding growth and developer community adoption.

GitHub has introduced premium requests to change its revenue strategy for its AI coding assistant. GitHub maintains an unlimited base model for all subscribers alongside their new tiered pricing system, which directly associates Copilot costs with the use of its most advanced features. Users are expected to examine their dependence on premium features, which may lead them to modify their work processes or explore higher subscription tiers based on their specific needs.

As AI coding assistants become more sophisticated and are incorporated into development processes, the developer community may start conversations about balancing the value these tools provide against their costs. The shift by GitHub demonstrates how the financial dynamics of AI-powered tools continue to develop alongside efforts to match pricing structures with these technologies’ computational needs.
