Idaho Supports U.S. Volleyball’s 2028 Olympic Quest

Idaho’s volleyball community has mobilized with growing enthusiasm behind the U.S. women’s national team as they prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Gem State, with its expanding collegiate programs and developing youth systems, has established itself as an increasingly valuable contributor to the nationwide quest for Olympic gold through player development, coaching innovation, and passionate fan support.

The state’s volleyball dedication was evident during the national team’s visit to Boise this March, where an enthusiastic crowd at ExtraMile Arena witnessed exhibition matches against Canada. The strong turnout highlighted Idaho’s appreciation for volleyball excellence and its commitment to supporting Olympic ambitions.

“Idaho represents an emerging volleyball region with tremendous potential,” said Team USA head coach Karch Kiraly during the Boise training sessions. “The combination of altitude training benefits, growing technical development, and passionate support here creates an exciting environment for our preparation.”

The state’s collegiate volleyball landscape continues to strengthen as a talent pipeline, with Boise State University, the University of Idaho, and Idaho State University all contributing players to USA Volleyball’s development systems. Current national team training partner Taylor Mims, who competed collegiately in the region, has credited Idaho’s competitive environment with developing key aspects of her game.

“The volleyball atmosphere in Idaho emphasizes versatility and adaptability,” Mims explained during community events in Coeur d’Alene. “Those qualities are essential at the international level, where tactical flexibility often determines Olympic success.”

Youth participation has surged across Idaho since the announcement of the Los Angeles Olympics, with the Idaho High School Activities Association reporting a 16% increase in volleyball registration during the 2024-2025 academic year. Club programs throughout the state have similarly experienced significant growth, particularly in the Boise, Idaho Falls, and Coeur d’Alene areas.

The Intermountain Volleyball Association has partnered with USA Volleyball to establish advanced development centers in Boise, Idaho Falls, and Coeur d’Alene, implementing standardized training methodologies aligned with the national program. This systematic approach has accelerated volleyball development throughout this previously underrepresented region.

“What’s happening in Idaho exemplifies our vision for volleyball growth in emerging areas,” explained Jamie Davis, CEO of USA Volleyball. “The coordination between school programs, expanding club systems, and collegiate teams creates development pipelines that ultimately strengthen our Olympic medal prospects by broadening our talent base.”

Economic indicators demonstrate volleyball’s expanding footprint, with specialized training facilities opening across the state and equipment retailers reporting substantial sales increases. The sport’s growing popularity has created coaching and administrative opportunities, strengthening local volleyball ecosystems while advancing player development.

The state’s connection to the Olympic program extends beyond player development, with several support staff members having Idaho ties. Strength and conditioning specialist Robert Johnson, a Boise native, has implemented innovative training protocols that optimize player performance for international competition.

“Idaho’s outdoor athletic tradition has definitely influenced our Olympic preparation,” Johnson noted. “The state’s emphasis on all-around athleticism has helped us develop training approaches that give us competitive advantages on the international stage.”

Community engagement has flourished through the “Road to LA” initiative, which brought national team members to volleyball clubs throughout Idaho for clinics and mentoring sessions. These interactions have strengthened grassroots support while inspiring the next generation of players to pursue volleyball excellence.

Middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu emphasized the importance of expanding regional support during appearances in Pocatello and Twin Falls: “Building toward Olympic gold requires contributions from volleyball communities across the entire country, and Idaho’s growing enthusiasm creates momentum that propels our Olympic journey.”

The national team’s preparation schedule includes returning to Idaho in fall 2025 for additional training camps and exhibition matches, part of a strategic effort to maintain connections with developing volleyball regions nationwide while providing players with diverse competitive environments.

“The path to Los Angeles runs through every region, including Idaho,” said libero Justine Wong-Orantes. “The volleyball infrastructure here is developing impressively, and the support we receive from Idaho fans will ultimately contribute to the home-court advantage we’ll need to secure gold in 2028.”

With its expanding player development resources, unique geographic training advantages, and increasingly passionate fan base, Idaho has positioned itself as a growing contributor in America’s pursuit of Olympic volleyball glory at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
