Jurassic World Rebirth’s Plot Centers Around Genetic Treasure Hunt

Universal Pictures has just dropped the final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the upcoming summer blockbuster that arrives over the Fourth of July weekend. Jurassic World Rebirth will premiere on July 2, 2025, and in typical Spielbergian fashion, the new Jurassic Park film will start the franchise from scratch with a couple of deliberate throwbacks to the original.

Leading the all-new cast of characters is actress Scarlett Johansson, who stars alongside Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, among others. Not only will Rebirth serve as the fourth Jurassic World installment and seventh film in the Jurassic franchise overall, but fans will also be treated to a return visit to the original research island at Jurassic Park. Helmed by Gareth Edwards, Jurassic World Rebirth also marks the director’s second go at making a big-budget dinosaur movie (the other one was 2014’s Godzilla).

The screenplay for Jurassic World Rebirth was written by David Koepp, a return to the franchise for the Jurassic Park (1993) scribe who also wrote the sequel, The Lost World (1997).

In the official synopsis, we learn that the action will take place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, during which time Earth’s ecosystem has been radically altered to the point where the planet has become inhospitable to dinosaur life. The diminished dino population is forced into shrinking pockets of equatorial biospheres that simulate their original prehistoric habitats. The trailer also reveals that there are three largest dinosaurs in the world: one each representing the biggest dinosaur by land, sea, and air. These three are important, as each contains valuable genetic material that may lead to a scientific discovery: a life-saving, miracle drug.

The next scene, as played out by Johansson’s character in the trailer, has her arriving with a mission team to a tropical biosphere in the middle of nowhere to extract the genetic material from the dinosaurs. However, their plans get derailed when a civilian boating family vacationing in the area is attacked by one of the aquatic dinosaurs, forcing the survivors to take shelter on an uninhabited island, which turns out to be a long-lost and top-secret Jurassic Park research island that has been out of operation for 20 years. Based on the trailer, there is more than just dinosaurs to worry about on the island.

Main Cast

The cast of Jurassic World Rebirth is star-studded, with Johansson and Ali leading the team. Johansson is to be joined by Rupert Friend, who plays Martin Krebs, a rep for a pharmaceutical company that has a very shady agenda. Jonathan Bailey, meanwhile, will take on the role of paleontologist Henry Loomis, while Manuel Garcia-Rulfo portrays Reuben Delgado, the head of the family whose holiday becomes anything but. Completing the kids are Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda, while Bechir Sylvain also comes on board as part of the mission team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge round out the cast in currently undisclosed roles.

Judging by the footage included in the trailer, many of the scenes from February’s first trailer have been reused to good effect. The repetition allows for greater familiarity with the characters and a deeper appreciation for the dinosaur action. The new trailer starts in a lab as a worker in a hazmat suit encounters a T Rex. He quickly realizes he’s trapped and no one can hear him over the sounds of his screaming—his screams, that is. It’s clear from that sequence that Jurassic World Rebirth is going to be loaded with big, dinosaur-filled action sequences, lots of suspense, and at least one moment where the stars let loose some emotional kung fu crying.

Fans are also treated to a sneak peek at one of the film’s big set pieces in the new trailer, which shows an attempted robbery of a pterosaur egg by unknown thieves. The pterosaur is eventually revealed to be Quetzalcoatlus northropi, a “flying carnivore the size of an F-16.” There’s also a good look at the old favorites, the raptors, as well as a new sea-slash-aquatic dinosaur in the form of a mosasaur. According to the trailer, the island on which Rebirth takes place has been intentionally used to hold “the worst of the worst,” which is, of course, the scariest, most unpredictable, and potentially most dangerous dinosaurs created in the park’s heyday.

Jurassic World Rebirth will feature some fresh new aspects to the franchise, including new locations, new creatures, and new moral quandaries. At the same time, the movie will also contain several heavy-hitting throwbacks to essentially reboot the Jurassic franchise while simultaneously continuing it. One of those throwbacks is to the original Jurassic Park research island, presumably with the hopes of lighting the pilot light on franchise nostalgia for die-hard fans.

Action-Packed Sequences

When it comes to action scenes, the trailer has enough to keep fans on the edge of their seats, or at least jumping a couple of inches in their seats. Sequences that may or may not make it into the film include escape attempts through lush jungles, dives into the depths to escape the dinosaurs, and attempts to evade death by hiding in sunken shipwrecks. As for Johansson, it’s clear that the actress will be bringing a new level of tactical action to the Jurassic franchise.

Jurassic World Rebirth will arrive in theaters on July 2, 2025, and should provide a monster-sized distraction from the heat over Independence Day weekend.
