Microsoft launches a new Xbox-branded user interface specifically created for portable Windows devices to expand its presence in the handheld gaming market. The interface developed with Asus will debut on the ROG Xbox Ally. The new UI replaces the conventional Windows desktop design with a full-screen tile interface that enhances touchscreen usability and gamepad control for a gaming experience similar to consoles.

The handheld gaming industry has been dominated by Valve’s Steam Deck that runs on SteamOS, which operates via Linux. SteamOS does not support all Windows games natively but through Proton—a compatibility layer which has advanced significantly it enables many games to run. Despite its remarkable features the system cannot fully replace Windows and certain users might experience compatibility problems. The combination of gaming-first design with efficient performance allowed SteamOS to achieve significant market success.

Microsoft plans to combine Windows flexibility with a gaming console’s smooth user experience in its new Xbox UI. Users will have access to the Windows game library through a portable format that delivers a natural gaming experience. Microsoft revealed that the new user interface will start with the ROG Xbox Ally before becoming available on other ROG Ally models. Additional Windows handhelds will receive the rollout starting from 2025.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed that the new interface is based on its 2022 internal “Windows Handheld Mode” concept but the similarities between them are evident. The initiative presented during an internal hackathon intended to address Windows’ handheld limitations by developing a streamlined interface dedicated to gaming which improved touch interaction and controller capabilities.

The redesigned Xbox UI combines an intuitive aesthetic with major performance enhancements. The replacement of the traditional Windows desktop with Microsoft’s new system results in RAM savings of several gigabytes while also decreasing energy use. The system resource savings bring about essential enhancements in performance and battery endurance which are vital for handheld gaming devices. Full Windows operating system and Asus’ Armoury Crate software created extra system overhead for devices such as the regular ROG Ally. The Xbox UI now connects these functionalities while avoiding extra system load.

The UI redesign won’t take away users’ ability to work with the traditional Windows desktop interface. Users can still access the traditional interface though they must launch it manually. The hybrid system allows users to switch between a gaming interface and a full desktop environment at any time.

Valve keeps improving its position through advances in SteamOS and Proton. Proton’s capabilities have expanded to support more Windows games while extending compatibility to non-Steam Deck devices such as specific ROG Ally models. Through SteamOS’s enhancements Linux surpassed 4% global desktop market penetration reaching a major achievement for an operating system which used to exist on the edges of mainstream gaming.

Microsoft delayed its response to the current industry changes because it has been focusing primarily on AI and security developments. For many years industry experts did not consider handheld gaming devices as a major rival to Windows PC dominance. The Steam Deck’s achievements combined with the advancing development of platforms like SteamOS have overturned previous perceptions. Now, Microsoft is finally responding.

Key takeaways from Microsoft’s move include:

  • Starting in 2025, Microsoft will launch a new Xbox UI on the ROG Xbox Ally before expanding it to additional devices.
  • The new user interface replaces Windows desktop with a full-screen tile-based system that enhances gaming performance.
  • Microsoft states that their new user interface reduces RAM usage and energy consumption while improving overall system performance.
  • Users retain full control over their device experience through the ongoing availability of the traditional desktop UI.

The new Xbox UI will only be considered a game-changer if it becomes widely adopted and demonstrates superior performance compared to SteamOS. But one thing is clear: Microsoft is finally taking handheld gaming seriously.
