Roscosmos Claimed Seals Fixed—But Pressure Still Drops

NASA postponed the upcoming commercial crew mission Axiom Mission 4 because of a new air leak detected inside the International Space Station. NASA confirmed the delay but has not provided detailed information about the problem. According to sources with insider knowledge the leak has become a serious problem because the station’s critical hardware is approaching its 30th year in space.

The International Space Station continues to function normally but faces a growing air leak issue that engineers are urgently investigating.

A Familiar Leak Returns with New Worry

The ISS crew has addressed similar issues before. The station has seen a constant minor air leak since 2019. The Russian Zvezda service module’s transfer tunnel named PrK was pinpointed by engineers as the source of the problem. The PrK tunnel establishes a connection between Zvezda and the docking port for Soyuz crew and Progress cargo spacecraft.

Russian cosmonauts conducted several repair attempts yet failed to completely stop the leaks. The maximum reduction achieved brought air loss down to a few pounds every day. For years, the go-to fix was simple: The PrK hatch should remain closed at all times except when docking.

Earlier this month, things seemed to improve. Roscosmos reported that their latest repairs had fully sealed the PrK module. NASA confirmed that no air was leaking inside the module because leak rates had ceased. The unexpected drop in ISS overall air pressure persisted despite other improvements.

Do the Hatch Seals Present the Actual Issue?

Experts now think the leak is likely coming from the hatch seals instead of the PrK module itself. Engineers suspect air leakage occurs through the hatch seals into the PrK which remains visually sealed. The module maintains its internal pressure while simultaneously reducing pressure from the rest of the ISS which creates an appearance of a stable situation.

NASA, understandably, is watching closely. According to a senior industry source NASA’s internal mood is best described as “worried” which greatly influenced the postponement of Axiom Mission 4 meant to launch Thursday.

The delay of Axiom Mission 4 allows NASA and Roscosmos more time to assess the current situation and decide if further troubleshooting steps are needed as per the agency’s short announcement. The proposed launch date of June 18 remains provisional until further developments arise with the leak situation.

Could Structural Fatigue Be to Blame?

A serious potential cause of the problem could be high cycle fatigue. The repeated stress exposure to metals over time leads to this phenomenon which primarily affects aluminum. Think about the repeated bending of a wire hanger until it breaks. It eventually snaps without warning. That’s high cycle fatigue.

Aloha Airlines Flight 243 experienced mid-air decompression in 1988 when fatigue weakened a fuselage section until it tore away. The pilots successfully landed the aircraft while the event highlighted the dangerous effects of metal fatigue.

NASA is aware of the risk. NASA determined structural cracking on the space station to be at the highest risk level through its 5×5 matrix since both its probability and impact were ranked as severe.

The agency’s only official statement reassures the public: Normal operations continue safely aboard the International Space Station according to NASA’s official statement.
