Middleton Community School Returns to District Property
The Middleton Community School has moved back onto Middleton School District property, now situated behind the Middleton Community Center off Main Street. Despite a smaller space, the school remains committed to its mission of supporting local students and families with a range of essential resources.
Essential Resources for Families
At its new location, Middleton Community School continues to offer access to clothing, household essentials, and additional resources for families in need. Director Sharlae Watkins emphasized the importance of comprehensive support, stating, “I think it's so important for our kids just to be able to come to school and be fed, be clothed, feel the support, all the way around that wrap around support.”
The school saw 20 family visits in the first five days of November alone, reflecting the growing reliance on these services as families adjust to the new location.
Community School Funding Remains Secure
Questions have arisen following the Middleton School District supplemental levy being rejected by voters. Some in the community have wondered whether this outcome might impact the Community School's operations. Watkins clarified that the Community School is funded through grants and community donations, so its services are not directly affected by the levy result.
Expanding Services Through Partnerships
The Community School is looking to broaden its support network for families. Plans include the establishment of a neighborhood library and a new partnership with the Idaho Foodbank. This collaboration will allow the school to begin distributing food to students and their families, further extending the resources available.
“We just want to be another resource and so we'll start being able to distribute some food to our students,” Watkins said.
Current Needs: Winter Clothing and Household Essentials
With colder weather approaching, there is an increased need for winter clothing and certain household essentials. Watkins noted that supplies such as toilet paper are running low. “I have no toilet paper, and so we try to usually give families the option of choosing five household hygiene items, and that's one that we're out of right now,” she explained.
Watkins underscored the ongoing importance of community contributions, stating, “It only works because it's Middleton and because it's such a great community.”
